PLANNING FOR COLLEGE

Fact Sheets
These fact sheets can be shared with students and parents to help them see what preparation is helpful from middle school through high school. There are also some tips to help parents guide their children.

Checklist for Building a College-Going Culture

  • Do we have current data on our college-going rates, and are we using it to make improvements?
  • Do we have college going "champions" - members of the faculty and administration who are advocates rather than gate-keepers and who see the potential in every student?
  • How proactive are we at creating a college-going culture? Is there a general expectation on campus that college is an important part of students' futures? Do our hiring and evaluation practices include a measure of college advocacy as an expectation?
  • Is academic rigor encouraged for all students? Are students often assigned to classes based on factors other than their potential?
  • Are we giving our students equitable access to our most effective teachers?
  • Are we reaching parents with information about college-going?
